Compton, Calif. – In Saturday’s showdown between the Orange County Riptide and the MLB Academy Barons, the Riptide’s strong offense pushed them past the Barons in a 7-4 victory.

The Riptide came out the gate swinging as they took an early lead in the first inning. Austin Kryszczuk (UNLV) scored Davis Diaz (Vanderbilt) with an RBI-single, giving the Riptide their first run. Kryszczuk came around to score on an error by Barons first baseman Darrien McDowell (Pensacola State College), putting the Riptide up by two.

The Riptide looked to add to their lead as they loaded the bases with one out in the second. Emilio Rosas (USC) scored on a sac-fly from Kryszczuk, putting the Riptide ahead by three with his second RBI in as many innings.

The Riptide’s scoring streak stayed alive in the third as Reed Spenrath (TCU) came around to score courtesy of an RBI-double from Diaz, making the score 4-0.

Entering the home half of the third, the Barons took advantage of three singles to cut the deficit to three. Riptide starter Tony Robie (Texas State) limited the damage with two quick outs after the RBI.

The Barons added one more run to their run total in the bottom of the fourth courtesy of an RBI-single from Kordell Brown (San Joaquin Delta College), cutting the deficit in half.

Matthew Magre (Arkansas) entered the game in the sixth inning in relief of Robie. Robie finished his day after five innings, allowing two runs and striking out seven. Magre surrendered one run in the inning, but after six the Riptide still led 4-3.

The Riptide added to their lead in the top of the seventh as Spenrath scored on an RBI-single from Efrain Cervantes (Nebraska), giving the Riptide a 5-3 lead.

The Barons plated one run in the bottom of the seventh, cutting the Riptide’s lead to one.

Dalton Wood (Rice) relieved Magre entering the bottom of the eighth inning and retired the Barons in order.

Going into the ninth, the Riptide hoped to add to their run total. Spenrath led off the inning with a walk, and quickly scored on an RBI-double from Charlie Taylor (Tennessee). Taylor came around to score later in the inning on Kolton Freeman’s (Dartmouth) RBI-single.

Wood came out for his second inning of work in the bottom of the ninth. In his two innings of work, Wood allowed only one hit as he closed out the Riptide’s 7-4 victory.

The Riptide travel to Pasadena Sunday night for a game against the Arroyo Seco Saints at 6:05pm PST.
