Riptide Overpowered by Saints: Early Lead and Relentless Scoring Result in 11-3 Defeat

Jul 23, 2024 | News

P1069362PASADENA, Calif – The Riptide suffered a tough loss tonight against the Arroyo Seco Saints. After a Riptide walk-off against the Saints on Sunday night, the momentum proved insufficient to carry into tonight’s game.

The Saints came ready to play as a grand slam from Joey Donnelly in the bottom of the first inning put them ahead of the Riptide by four runs.

The Riptide did not get discouraged, however, and responded with a run in the top of the second when Matt Spear had an RBI groundout to score Michael Diaz who walked to get on base.

The Saints did not let up after the first. Instead, the squad clubbed a two-run home run in the bottom of the second and added on two more from an RBI single and a wild pitch.

JC Allen and Jack Hammond scored the next two runs with RBI singles’ for the Riptide in the top of the third, but those two runs would be the last to be scored for the Riptide.

Both teams were quiet through the top of the seventh, but the Saints were ready to tack on a few more. Another home run, an RBI double, and a passed ball allowed three more runs across the board, bringing the score to 3-11. The score remained at this total until the end of the game.

“We’ve given up 53 runs in four gams at this ball park,” said head coach Connor Spencer about the recent Riptide and Saints matchups. “It’s primarily off of right handed pitching… it’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen before. At the end of the day, we’ve reached the point where we’ve got to tip our cap.”

The Riptide squad looks to come back from this loss tomorrow night against the MLB Academy Barons at the Great Park.
