Riptide Squeeze by Oaks with 7-6 win

Irvine, Calif— The Orange County Riptide survived a short-lived comeback by the Conejo Oaks in the 9th inning on Wednesday, winning 7-6 to extend their CCL South lead to two games.

The Riptide wasted no time and struck in the top of the 1st on a Grant MacArthur (San Joaquin Delta College) RBI double the opposite way to right field to give the Riptide an early 1-0 lead.

Josh Randall (Univ. of San Diego) pitched lights out in the first inning, striking out the first three batters he faced. He ran into trouble in the second inning after giving up a run as Eli Patton hit a two-run home run to give Conejo Oaks a 3-1 lead.

The Riptide wasted no time in bouncing back as Grady Morgan (Fresno State) and Isaiah Morales (Saddleback) had RBI singles to tie the game at 3.

With bases loaded and two outs, Brandon Burckel (Houston) capitalized by lacing a line drive over the third baseman’s head to bring in two runs as the Riptide retook the lead 5-3.

“With bases loaded, I knew he was going to throw me a lot of sliders,” Burckel said. “I got down to two strikes and that was pretty much his out pitch so that’s what I was hunting.”

The Riptide and Conejo Oaks each scored in the 8th and 9th innings. The Riptide went into the bottom of the 9th with a 7-4 lead after Connor Clift (USC) hit a double off the wall in right center field.

Nolan George (UNLV) came onto close the game for the Riptide but it wasn’t easy as Patton hit his second two-run home run of the game with still no outs.

George had to work harder to earn the save, but he finished strong striking out the last two batters he faced to sweep the week series with Conejo Oaks.
