Sprinkler Mishap Leads to Delayed Loss for Riptide

Jul 17, 2024 | Riptide, CCL, News

IRVINE, Calif – The San Diego SunRays defeated the Riptide in unforeseen circumstances on June 30, 2024. A sprinkler incident at the Great Park Stadium cut the game short and resumed on July 16, 2024, in the 11th inning.

The SunRays scored five runs in the top of the first due to two RBI singles, a defensive error, and a two-run RBI. They held steady at five runs until the bottom of the fourth when the Riptide bats responded.

Jack Hammond hit an RBI double to score Nathan Cadena, who singled to get on base. A walked-in run added another, bringing the total to 5-2.

Max Senesac doubled to score Stiveson in the bottom of the sixth, adding another run. The bats on both teams stayed relatively quiet until the bottom of the ninth, the Riptide’s last chance to take the lead. Nathan Cadena hit a two-run bomb to tie the score and send the game into extras.

The teams exchanged runs, bringing the score to 6-6 at the bottom of the tenth and 7-7 in the bottom of the eleventh. With no outs and a runner

on first after Jack Hammond singled to bring in Matt Spear, the Riptide had momentum. However, the sprinklers unexpectedly came on, forcing the players off the field.

The head coaches decided to pause the game and continue it at the teams’ next matchup.

The game resumed last night in the eleventh inning with Jack Hammond on first base, but three quick outs forced a 12th inning.

With an automatic runner on second and an early walk, the SunRays threatened with players in scoring position. A one-out base hit put the Sun Rays in the lead, but the Riptide cut them off there. Despite a valiant effort, the Riptide couldn’t score any more runs, and the SunRays took the first game of the day.

“Our plan was to be extremely aggressive out of the gates … it didn’t work out. We put ourselves in a position to score a run, but it didn’t go our way,” said head coach Connor Spencer.

A regular nine-inning game followed the continuation of the previous game, where the Riptide came back to shut out the Rays.
